Which future for OpenLaszlo ?
I just read this article named AIR for JavaScript Developers is now Available for Download on Digital Backcountry.
Ajaxian just released a user guide on how to mix AIR and Javascript. So now you can build RIA, and even RDA, with this tool.
I have already exposed in this article (in French) things that were annoying me in Openlaszlo : mainly a poor learning curve and the lack of professionnal IDE. But the possibility to compile for several runtimes (Flash, Dhtml, mobiles) was a very powerful feature compared to Flex or Silverlight. Apparently Adobe has now caught up this advantage, and aven more : for the time being, Openlaszlo cannot output RDA applications.
Moreover, according to Ryan Steward, Adobe may now focus on the mobile platform, and allow Flash and AIR to be used on mobile devices.
So what is there left for Openlaszlo ? Not many things, I am afraid of. Openlaszlo needs to grow up, and to do it shortly.
It must get a real professionnal IDE to make it acceptable by sofware development companies. It must focus on delivering Desktop Applications, as they become more and more important in the web developement landscape.
This is just my opinion. No mistake, I love OpenLaszlo and I had great times making applications these last months. But after these preliminaries, I wondered if it was possible to build something strong and secure between my company and OpenLaszlo for professionnaly scaled projects. For the time being, the answer if unfortunately “no”.
